Black History Month

Diamond Sweethearts is a diverse student organization at Texas State, made up of strong and empowering women. Together as an organization, we love to recognize what makes each and every member unique, and the value of how being different brings us together. This month we would like to recognize Black History Month and give our members the opportunity to discuss what Black History Month means to them and what it means to them to be apart of a diverse student organization!

To my sweeties,

As I think about this month and what this month ultimately means to me, I first have to thank all of you for giving me a space where I can undeniably be myself. Black history month to me is a month where we celebrate the men, the women, and the movements that have led me to the person I am and every other black woman, man, and family to be able to enjoy the freedoms I have today. This month is the time during the year where I can see how many others are thankful and support the black community. I believe that we should celebrate black history every day and one month is not enough time to shine light on the amazing men and women who have done everything possible to make this country what it is today.

Diamond Sweethearts stuck out to me because of the diversity I saw on their instagram and other platforms. I remember being a high school senior just wanting to make sure I found a group of girls who some looked like me and some did not. I wanted to join an organization that had women from all walks of life, and was not scared to embrace every member’s race, ethnicity, and background. After I began talking to some of the members, I slowly started to realize how truly caring and loving this organization can be. We do not look at anything besides who you are. The person on the inside is what matters, we focus on your heart and what you love.

Being in Diamond Sweethearts has been a great, loving experience, for I have had nothing but laughs, cries, and truly a group of girls that I love more than everything. I have gotten to learn about different backgrounds, and for that I am so thankful. Diamond Sweethearts I could not explain the amount of love and admiration I have for you. You have shown me what it means to be unexplainable myself regardless of any consequence. You welcomed me with open arms ready to embrace me. Not only me, you have embraced every women who has walked through our doors.

Diamond Sweethearts, I love and thank you!,

Black History Month is historically celebrated during the entire month of February. I personally celebrate black history every month, every year, and every day. I have such a love and appreciation for black culture, art, and literature. African Americans don’t get celebrated or recognized enough by the rest of society so it’s our job as a black community to celebrate, support, and recognize each other all the time! During the month of February I try as much as possible to highlight African American accomplishments and history through posting, reposting, participating in Black History events and anything else I can do so everyone else can see how far the black community has come, and how we aren’t finished yet.

It feels so good to be a part of a diverse organization like Diamond Sweethearts. The main reason why I joined Diamond Sweethearts my freshman year was because of the diversity that I was used to growing up. Not only is Diamond Sweethearts diverse in race but body types, beliefs, styles, interests and etc. I know I can be 110% myself in this organization and get nothing but love and admiration back. This organization also makes me feel celebrated for my accomplishments all the time and that’s a beautiful thing, especially in college where we forget to slow down and celebrate ourselves for how far we’ve come. I hope my role and influence in Diamond Sweethearts allow for more girls that look like me to feel encouraged to join because we definitely have room for you and we would love to have you!
